The Library will be having a Social February 12, 2010 from 12 to 5 to kick off the "Big Read."

On march 9, 2010 there will be a book discussion on "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. That is the theme of the "Big Read" this year.

The Big Read is an initiative of The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), designed to restore reading to the center of American culture. A 2004 report by the NEA found that not only is literary reading in America declining rapidly among all groups, but that the rate of decline has accelerated, especially among the young. The Big Read aims to address this crisis squarely and effectively. It provides citizens with opportunity to read and discuss a single book within their communities.

The Alabama Statewide Big Read effort is a partnership between the public libraries in the state along with Alabama Public Library ervoce(i.e. The State Library and the Alabama Center for the Book.
